Live long and prosper

Heard of the passing of Leonard Nimoy.
Mostly known for his amazing character Spock from the days of Star Trek
he was, all told, a gentleman.
The Star Trek universe was a commendable way for Gene Roddenbury
to create a glimpse at the future.

I read one of his books
and appreciated his outlook and his humor.
Rest in peace.

He has legions of fans and
I like what others, who knew him, are saying.

===================================
"I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love."
-William Shatner

Today, the world lost a great man, and I lost a great friend. We return you now to the stars, Leonard. You taught us to "Live Long And Prosper," and you indeed did, friend. I shall miss you in so many, many ways.  ----George Takei

"Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future. I loved Spock. In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for 'Live long and prosper.' And after 83 years on this planet—and on his visits to many others – it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today." —President Obama

Throw back Thursday

This is throwing back pretty far.

We probably lived on Upper James at this point.
Wish my memory was better.
Then again...maybe it is just fine to remember what I do.
Most of it is pretty ok with me.

Sean - wish I was there

Sean, formerly from GBS, is performing in Hamilton tonight
a small venue.
It would have been a joy to attend.

He explained in a Spectator interview some of the reasons that the band is no longer together.
Ya gotta respect the guy for following his heart and walking away.
I wish for him only the very best.

As well as for Alan and Bob
Your music brought joy
and lives on in the recordings.

walk blog 7

Still unable to do some serious walking outside so I am still relegated to the treadmill.
But I have watched two movies this week on the treadmill so it wasn't a complete waste....
well maybe it was.
What a huge piece of moronic humour.
Left at the house after Henry moved out.
Not many of this movie selections do I have the urge to watch.
But heard that the sequel of this one was coming out so
thought I would give it a try.
It seems that I can, at times, appreciate some moronic humour.
I happen to enjoy Jim Carrey and thought that the movie was a hoot.
At another time and place I probably could't subject myself to it.
I will also claim that it is not a good movie to watch on the treadmill because,
laughing and walking do not companions make.
At least for me....as to why - you would have to ask my mom
about her donkey experience to have further details.

This was recommended to me by Ed Looyenga.
Then I found it in Value Village the next week.
Funny too, but a completely different form.
Sometimes I like British (Irish) humour, other times not so much.

This was a great story that was told well.
Not always funny but
when Michael jumps on the motorcycle and races back to Ned's to fool the lottery dude...
well suffice to say I should not have been on the treadmill for that scene either.

scarf

This is a scarf that I had made years ago.
It was supposed to take 2 skeins of wool.
I used 5.
I kept dropping stitches and so felt obligated to add stitches.
I think I added more than I should have.
Oh well.
I was going to take it apart and redo it but
then thought that I should keep it the way that it is.
It is a fine example of 'knittin' gone wrong'

walk blog 6

So the crime spree continues

This was my loot from the second week that I went out scavanging.
Unfortunately one of the containers that I swiped did not have a lid on it.
This I did not notice until I was a number of houses down.
The conundrum : walk it back to it's blue box home?
put it into someone else's blue box?
keep it and hope that I have a lid to fit it?

I kept it and, no, I did not have a lid to fit it
so it sits in my basement
waiting for the day
when a matching lid will find its way to my V8 container.

I now go out on Wednesdays (garbage day for the area just north of us)
for my walk with large bags so as to carry away the booty.

Then we had a snowstorm on the next Monday and people were still mostly digging out
so I did not venture out on that day to continue the thievery.

But I just had to go out yesterday,
some of the sidewalks were still not cleared.

But this was my haul from this week

I really like the antifreeze jugs -
 a good size and
a wide mouth and
a little bit see thru for easy filling.

A number of notes from an expert

Pick somewhere close by- but not too close
Might not be best to have to walk back 3 miles with your prizes
Nor night it be good to be seen rummaging through your next door neighbours trash.

Have large bags and learn to slide the containers in quickly and quietly.

Go out early - before the recycling truck comes by
and you end up walking past empty blue boxes
which mock your failure to procure your treasure.
Don't go out too early - you catch people still putting their recyclables out at the curb
or even leaving for work
 or walking to school.
Crowded streets make the task a little more awkward.

Persistence wins the day.

Finding Forrester

The other day I watched 'Finding Forrester'.
Enjoyed it alot.
When watching, some of the lines seemed to me very quotable.
I went searching for some of the quotes on the interweb and
discovered that I was right.

--------------------------------

Why are your socks inside out?
Socks are badly designed. The seams are on the inside. They hurt the toes.
In some cultures, it's good luck to wear something inside out.

You believe that?

No. But it's like praying. What do you risk? And I do go outside.
How do you think those windows get cleaned?
Now, about this professor of yours.
How did it feel having him tell you what you can't do?

Like he knew he was better than me.

Then let's show him what you can do.
Why is it the words we write for ourselves are always
so much better than the words we write for others?

==============================================================

What are you doing?

I'm writing. Like you'll be, when you start punching those keys.
Is there a problem?

No. I'm just thinking.

No thinking. That comes later. You write your first draft with your heart.
You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is...to write.
Not to think.

Start typing that.
Sometimes the simple rhythm of typing gets us from page one to page two.
When you begin to feel your own words, start typing them.
Punch the keys for God's sake!
Yes!You're the man now, dog.

Jamal Whatever we write in this apartment stays in this apartment. No exceptions.

==========================================================

"The rest of those who have gone before us cannot steady the
unrest of those to follow." You wrote that in your book.

==========================================================

What's hard is growing up in a place cops don't even want to be in after dark.
What's hard is knowing you're safe there. 'Cause the people you need to worry about,
know you've got nothing to give them.

So it's a good thing you're here.

These people don't think I got anything to give them, either.

====================================================

Someone I once knew wrote that we walk away from our dreams afraid that we may fail,
or worse yet, afraid we may succeed.

====================================================

While I knew so very early on that you would realise your dreams
I never imagined I would once again realise my own.
Seasons change, young man.
While I waited until the winter of my life to see what I've seen this past year
there is no doubt I would have waited too long, had it not been for you.

still too much

While this picture is not from my front yard
there is still too much snow to have a good walk today.
Ugh

Don't know if it will be melting any time soon.

This was Monday morning
and Martin was getting ready to do some plowing.

snow day

It is a snow day for the kids who go to school.
But we have no kids who go to school anymore.

Maybe we should make one of these.

Andrew didn't go in to work.

Henry sent a picture to Martin of the bacon and eggs he was making for himself
since he was not going in to work.

Hope the rest of the family are hunkered down safe and snug.
